History & Goals

Overview & Goals

The How2Recycle Label is a voluntary, standardized labeling system that clearly communicates recycling instructions to the public.

The goals of the How2Recycle Label were developed through open discussion with numerous stakeholders, and relate to the ultimate vision of a system where valuable packaging materials are beneficially recovered. Our goals are to:

  1. Reduce confusion by creating a clear, well-understood, and nationally harmonized label that enables industry to convey to consumers how to recycle a package.
  2. Improve the reliability, completeness, and transparency of recyclability claims.
  3. Provide a labeling system that follows Federal Trade Commission Green Guides.
  4. Increase the availability and quality of recycled material.

History & Future

The How2Recycle Label began in 2008 and is a project of GreenBlue’s Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The How2Recycle Label program finished its soft launch in early 2013 and now has over twenty participating companies and brands. Read our How2Recycle Label Soft Launch Report to learn more about the program’s early stages, and check out our 2013 Annual Report for recent program updates. As we hope to have the How2Recycle Label on the majority of consumer goods packaging by 2016, the program is always looking for new participants.
