Support In-Store Recycling
The “Store Drop-off” label was created to encourage use of the widely available polyethylene bag recycling systems available in many retail locations, particularly grocery stores. Though bag and film recycling is growing, many consumers are not aware that packaging such as dry cleaning bags and paper towel wraps can be accepted into this recycling stream.
Integrating the How2Recycle Label and program messaging with store drop-off locations will ensure wider collection of plastic packaging and lower contamination through clear consumer directions.
Governments/Municipalities
Local government staff and government agencies, in most cases, are the primary interface with the public for questions about materials and package types that are accepted in local recycling programs. We invite you to work with us, and learn more about the How2Recycle Label, so that you can be prepared to answer residents’ questions, by doing one or more of the following:
Help Harmonize Recyclability Language
Variation of recycling programs, as well as inconsistency of recycling communication at all levels, is a major cause of consumer confusion. It is therefore extremely important for each municipal program to provide clear instructions for its residents. The labels provided by the How2Recycle Label can collectively increase the level of consumer knowledge about recycling. If local programs reference the label alongside the items they accept, the How2Recycle Label can be a unifying, recognizable piece of information across all programs.
Provide Data
To the extent possible, we would like to gather data about the impact of the recycling label. We need municipal representatives to support us by providing feedback. Please help us obtain data by doing one or both of the following:
- Submit data about interaction with the public regarding the How2Recycle Label
- Document the impact of the label on recycling programs
Packaging Materials Suppliers & Industry Associations
The How2Recycle Label prominently identifies the general recyclability of packaging materials and components to consumers. This visibility may elicit customer inquiries. We invite you to learn more about the label through one or more of the following resources:
- Review the content in this website
- Subscribe to the SPC’s monthly email newsletter
- Ask a question of GreenBlue’s Sustainable Packaging Coalition staff
Provide Program Feedback
One of the purposes of the How2Recycle label is to encourage packaging materials suppliers and industries to work to improve the recyclability of the packaging products they produce and to promote acceptance of those products in municipal recycling programs. Further, the How2Recycle label aims to clarify actual recyclability of packaging components of packaging to consumers. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the label, we need your feedback as well as any feedback received from your stakeholders.
Also, let us know about specific changes you have made to your packaging products as a result of the How2Recycle label, or potential impacts on your business that have resulted.
Recycling Facilities
Recyclers play an important role in guiding the How2Recycle Label, ensuring that the label accurately reflects best recycling practice and optimal conditions for recovery. As a company that processes and markets recovered materials, or recycles those materials, we are interested in your experience regarding the How2Recycle Label and its underlying data. We invite you to learn more about the recycling label and how it relates to your business.
Provide Program Feedback
The How2Recycle Label is intended to help increase recycling rates, decrease contamination, minimize confusion, and provide transparency by providing consumers with clear and objective information about the general recyclability of common packaging materials. However, because recycling facilities differ in the materials that they accept, the messaging on the recycling label may not perfectly match what your facility accepts. In order to evaluate the recycling label system, we need to hear from you. Please convey your thoughts to us so we can continue to improve the program.
